1. Research Before You Arrive

You never want to go into the car buying process without some background information about what you want and how much you want to spend. Once you narrow down the type of vehicle you’re interested in, check some websites like Kelly Blue Book to find out the average price for the available vehicles. Mileage, age, and whether or not the car has been in an accident will all affect the price point.

2. Check the Dealership Website

Look at the inventory that’s available on the dealer’s website. That way you can limit the amount of time you have to spend looking around in person and you can narrow down your selection. Call to confirm that the vehicle you’re interested in is still on the lot and still available.

3. Decide on Your Must-Haves

As you start knocking different cars off the list, decide what you absolutely have to have. Don’t compromise on your must-haves, but keep in mind that every used vehicle will have its quirks.

4. Pick a Budget

Before you head to the dealership, decide on a firm budget. If you’re comfortable with a little wiggle room, that’s fine. Don’t purchase something you can’t afford as it will result in financial disaster in the long run.

5. Scope Out the Best Salesperson

Ask around to see if your friends and family know any reputable salespeople. Read online reviews for dealerships as well. You want to feel comfortable with the person you’re working with so that you ask any and all questions.

6. Ask for the CarFax

Don’t finalize your purchase before you check the quality score, owner history, and accident history on the car you’re looking at. Do this by asking for the CarFax or AutoCheck.

7. Take it for a Test Drive

Now that you’ve narrowed your choices down, pick your top two vehicles. You’ll want to take both of them for a test drive to make sure they’re comfortable and feel sturdy and stable. Listen for any strange sounds, check for any pulling, inspect the interior and exterior for any damage or dings.

8. Don’t go straight for the SUVs

While crossovers and SUVs are increasingly popular, they will cost you more than a car, even when they’re previously owned. The insurance will also cost more per month and your gas mileage won’t be as impressive. If you don’t absolutely need an SUV, stick to sedans!
